Thanksgiving Through The Years

Thanksgiving Through The Years After the first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, each of the 13 American colonies held an annual harvest festival and day of thanksgiving. There was no set day for the holiday, and it varied among the colonies. In 1777, George Washington decreed a day of thanksgiving to celebrate a British defeat during the Revolutionary War, and he and subsequent presidents proclaimed Thanksgiving Days periodically over the next 86 years, although not every year and not on any particular date. In the early 1800s, these annual Presidential proclamations came to an end, and it wasn't until 1863 that the holiday resumed.

During the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving to occur on the last Thursday of November, and it has been observed annually ever since. In 1939, in an effort to stimulate the economy during the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to move the holiday to the third Thursday in November, giving stores more time to advertise Christmas merchandise before December 25. About half the states refused to change the date, and in 1941, Congress compromised by choosing the fourth Thursday of November, which is sometimes the last Thursday and sometimes the next to last.

Preventing Vehicle Rollovers

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle rollovers account for nearly 1/3 of the roughly 43,000 deaths that occur each year from passenger-vehicle crashes. The Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration offer these tips for avoiding rollovers:

Observe posted speed limits. The average speed in rollover crashes is over 60 miles per hour.
Don't drink and drive. More than 60 percent of fatal rollover crashes involve alcohol.
If your vehicle leaves the roadway, gradually reduce speed before easing back onto the road.
Be especially careful in rural areas where the ditches, embankments, or soft soil commonly found next to rural roads cause nearly 75 percent of the nation's rollover crashes.
Keep your tires properly inflated.
Don't overload your roof rack; follow the manufacturer's instructions and observe weight limits.
Wear your seatbelt. In 2002, 72 percent of those who died in rollover crashes were not wearing safety belts.

  Proper Use Of Baby Gates

Proper Use Of Baby Gates
Baby gates are a great way to keep little ones out of harm's way - as long as they are used properly. Make sure your child avoids injury by following these guidelines from the Consumer Product Safety Commission:

Don't use a pressure-mounted gate at the top of a stairway. If a child leans or pushes against the gate, it can give way and the child can fall down the stairs. Instead, use a gate that screws to the wall.
Choose gates with a straight top edge and rigid bars or a mesh screen, or accordion-style gates where the V- or diamond-shaped openings are less than 1.5 inches wide. Children may be able to climb gates with square openings.

In addition, Jane Snyder, a baby safety expert, advises checking the height of your baby gate: it should be at least one-half the height of your child to prevent climbing.
