Last-Minute Preparations Before
The Gathering

To pull off the perfect party or family gathering, attention to
details ahead of time can assure you of success. Here are a few
things to remember:

  • Designate a place for coats. The master bedroom is a good choice because the entry closet won't be big enough.
  • Clear the entry way of clutter. Several people could be entering at the same time so put away the umbrella stand.
  • Check the bathroom for tissue, towels, and soap.
  • Plan the music. Make it something quiet for dinner so people can hear each other talk.
  • Check the place where you will put hors d'oeuvres and set out items that don't have to be refrigerated.
  • If you won't have hired help, ask friends or guests to help serve or pick up dishes.
  • For an informal gathering, give people their drinks and have them take them to the table when dinner is served.

Paying Off Credit Cards
If you owe money on several credit cards, most financial advisers recommend first paying down the card with the highest interest rate, but financial expert David Bach, author of Smart Couples Finish Rich, says this is no longer the best policy. Instead, pay off the card or cards with the lowest balances first. This will reduce the risk of those cards incurring late fees (often as high as $39 forbeing even one day late) and spikes in interest rates for late payment.

Welcome to Santa's Castle!
Christmas as a holy day and a fun-filled holiday touches the
hearts of people everywhere. Children especially are drawn to
the festivities as they write letters to Santa Claus, decorate
trees, and leave cookies and milk under the tree for the jolly
fellow.
Many sleighs full of children's letters to Santa are addressed
to him at the North Pole. Others are sent to
such places as Santa Claus, Indiana, and
Santa Claus, Georgia. Santa Claus,
Georgia has streets with names such
as Candy Cane Road, Rudolph Way,
Dancer Street, and Sleigh Street.
This year in Santa Claus, Indiana, a
unique landmark has reopened. The Candy
Castle, originally sponsored by the Curtiss Candy Company,
creators of Baby Ruth and Butterfinger candy bars, was known
as Santa's home. It housed a wood shop where Santa could be
watched making toys.
Today the new castle, which is free to the public, has found
new life. The Candy Castle includes a Gallery of Santa Claus
History and a large selection of gourmet candy canes. Kids
have the opportunity to sign Santa's Good Book (but only if
they've been good!) or drop a letter to Santa in "Santa's Post
Office."
Postal ocials caution that candy canes and cookies for
Santa as well as hay for his reindeer should not be mailed as
they may be crushed. Such treats should be left under the tree
on Christmas Eve.

60th Anniversary Of
It’s A Wonderful Life

Nearly everyone’s favorite holiday movie, It’s A Wonderful
Life, premiered December 20, 1946. Starring Jimmy Stewart
and Donna Reed, the movie was a box office flop. It was
nominated for five Oscars but won none of them, although it
did win a Golden Globe award for director
Frank Capra. When no one bothered to renew the
copyright in 1973, television stations started
broadcasting the film during the Christmas
season, and its popularity skyrocketed. It’s a
Wonderful Life was voted number one in the
American Film Institute’s list of America’s
most inspiring movies. Rumor has it that the
Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie were named after minor characters in the movie(although Sesame Street producers claim it’s a coincidence). One of the most famous lines in the movie comes from Clarence, the angel: “Every time you hear a bell ring, it means that some angel’s just got his
wings.”
